Advent Devotional - December 3

December 3 Mary

“Christ is born of Mary”

Pray

When danger threatens, or when I am tempted to turn and run; or when love challenges me, and deep calls unto deep, may I be ready to give You, Lord, the obedience of a surrendered heart. Amen.

Read – Luke 1:38

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as You have said."

Reflect

Mary still gets a bad press in some circles today, which is a shame because she certainly doesn’t deserve it. It may be a reaction to the excesses of a previous age, but we don’t pay enough attention to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Her obedience to the call of God enabled the events we celebrate at Christmas. Oh, doubtless God could have found some other way to bring His plan to fruition but He didn’t. He didn’t need to, because when destiny came calling, all wrapped up in an angel’s improbable, incredible news, Mary was ready. And Mary said, “Yes.”

Would we have said “yes,” given the implications for Mary’s future? Would we have weighed the options before us before issuing a regretful rebuttal? “Sorry, Lord, but it’s not a convenient time.” “Sorry, Lord, but what would Joseph say?” “Sorry, Lord, but what would the neighbors think?” Mary knew that no time is ever convenient, unless it is the kairos time of God’s opportunity. She knew that her betrothed was a deeper, more godly man than many gave him credit for. And she didn’t care what the neighbors thought, as long as she was right with God. Mary’s obedience should be a pattern for our own. Can we say, with her, “May it be to me as You have said”?
